In 1971, Frances Moore Lappé’s DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET awakened readers to the waste and destruction built into grain-fed, meat-centered eating, showing that humans are creating the experience of scarcity and making the case for plant-centered eating. It sold over three million copies worldwide in multiple languages with its simple guidelines for a healthy diet and hundreds of meat-free recipes. In 2021, Frances Moore Lappé released a special 50th anniversary edition of Diet For a Small Planet. Here, she shows how plant-centered eating can help restore our damaged ecology, address the climate crisis, and move us towards real democracy. With recipes spruced up for today’s palate and including offerings from renowned chefs, Lappé offers a fascinating philosophy on changing yourself—and the world—that can start with changing the way we eat.
